Day 01

Jomolhari Trek
Eight days into Bhutan's mountain frontier — tracing the Paro Chu to the sacred base camp beneath the 7,314m peak of Mt. Jomolhari.
Overview
Journey highlights
The Jomolhari Trek is the defining high-altitude experience in Bhutan — a route that pushes north from Paro into the mountain frontier of the Himalaya, tracing the Paro Chu river through forested gorges before climbing to the sacred base camp at Jangothang (4,040m), set directly beneath the sheer 7,314m face of Mt. Jomolhari. The peak marks the Bhutan-Tibet border and is one of the most revered mountains in the country; its presence commands the landscape from the moment it appears above the valley. Beyond base camp, the route continues over the high Nyele La pass (4,870m) into genuinely remote territory, passing Lingshi Dzong before descending through river valley and forest toward Thimphu. Terrain shifts dramatically across the week — from subtropical riverside to high alpine wilderness, with yak herder camps, ancient monasteries, and almost total absence of other travellers.
- Arrive at Jangothang Base Camp (4,040m) beneath the sheer face of the sacred Mt. Jomolhari (7,314m)
- Cross Nyele La (4,870m) — the highest pass of the route — with panoramic views deep into the Himalaya
- Trek through remote yak herder settlements rarely visited by outsiders
- Pass Lingshi Dzong, a fortified monastery commanding a ridge between two high valleys
