Day 01

Paro Tshechu
Five days centred around Paro's ancient festival — mask dances, the giant Thongdrel, and sacred tradition.
Overview
Journey highlights
The Paro Tshechu is one of Bhutan's most significant and visually arresting festivals, held each spring at the ancient Rinpung Dzong in Paro. The festival honours Guru Rinpoche — the tantric master who brought Buddhism into Bhutan in the 8th century — and draws devout locals from across the valleys, arriving in their finest traditional dress to witness, pray, and celebrate. The emotional heart of the experience is the Thongdrel: a monumental sacred appliqué of the Guru, unfurled from the dzong walls before dawn and displayed for only a few hours before the morning sun rises. Attending this moment is among the most moving things possible in Bhutan. This journey is built around the festival days, weaving in Paro's ancient temples and the Tiger's Nest hike for a complete and deeply immersive stay.
- Witness the pre-dawn Thongdrel unfurling at Rinpung Dzong — a sacred ritual seen only once a year
- Watch the Cham mask dances performed by monks in elaborate brocade costumes at the dzong courtyard
- Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest and most revered 7th-century temples
- Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) perched on its sheer granite cliff above Paro valley
